Do More. – Making More of Valentine’s Day

18 Feb

Valentine's-Day-Dog

Now that Valentine’s Day has passed, it’s time to think of how to get Valentine’s Day to its full potential!

Although the essence of Valentine’s Day was created by Hallmark long ago, and helped them sell more cards, like Luke Skywalker said to Darth Vader, “there is good in you” Valentine’s Day. At the “heart” of Valentine’s Day is a desire to honor love, to find love and to give/share love with others, but why save it for once a year? Shouldn’t we DoMore to show people we love them all year? It can be as simple as letting them know you’re thinking of them every so often.

Even if you don’t agree and would rather save your energy for assigned times, you might want to do it in different ways.

Do it differently: As I was doing research on some ideas, I found an interesting  way to celebrate Valentine’s Day  called “Generosity Day.” It was founded by SASHA DICHTER, the Chief Innovation Officer of the non-profit Acumen Fund and two of his friends. Seems like a good idea.

What are some of the things you’ve done for someone you love outside of Valentine’s Day? Here are some fun things I’ve done and try to do on an on-going basis:

  • Chocolate: Bring chocolate truffles from the local shop near where I work or chocolate chip ice cream for my wife at random times during the year because I know she loves it
  • Greek Pastries: Send my dad his favorite dessert (galaktoboureko) from the pastry shop he’s been going to since before I was born (but can’t anymore since he lives 500 miles away) and shipping it to him (Lefkos Pyrgos in Astoria)
  • Souvenirs: Get my mom a souvenir whenever I travel internationally

What are some fun ways that you’ve expressed your love to someone outside of Valentine’s Day? Share with us and others to inspire them to DoMore!

Do More. Emergency Preparedness – After Sandy

10 Feb

East Coast Begins To Clean Up And Assess Damage From Hurricane Sandy

Although Hurricane Sandy is not in the news as much recently, people are still without homes and have been devastated by one of the worst storms of the century. Right now as I write this blog entry, yet again, we in the Northeast are experiencing a major storm billed “The Snow Bomb.”

With what seems to be the beginning of a potential pattern of major storms coming our way for the long-term, I thought it would be good to share my Disaster Preparedness Packet with you.

Here are a few things I’ve put together that might help as you prepare for anything that might come your way (storms, pandemic, Zombies, Aliens, etc.):

Helpful info to be prepared for anything: this info got me through Sandy and gave me and my wife peace of mind when all was dark in lower Manhattan after transformers exploded near Union Square.

  • My Amazon.com Preparedness Wish List: One of the most important things for preparedness is making the list of items you’ll need to be hydrated, full, warm and sheltered. In this list are items you will want to have so you can stay home for at least 2-4 weeks if you need to, and have the right things if you need to leave your home in a moment’s notice. I’ve prioritized the list in order of importance so that you can gather them over time without concern about being ill-prepared. The list includes helpful books as well. You can download the list here: http://wp.me/a37vSg-3R
  • Food & Water: The list above does not include food lists but the books and some links in the doc do have some guidance on this. Additionally, below are some links to give you a sense for what you should keep at home that you can get online or from your local grocery (e.g., dried foods, canned foods and other non-perishables).
  • Help in Your Community: It always helps to know where you can get help in case you aren’t as prepared as you would like OR if you would like help getting prepared. CERT – Community Emergency Response Teams – https://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/ have a lot of great resources for members of local communities. From my perspective, it’s a great resource that not nearly enough people know about or utilize.

Additional helpful resources: These are some other resources you might consider if you want to go beyond the basics

  • CDC Zombie Fun? Yep, the CDC has found a way to make Disaster Preparedness Fun, especially for all you “Walking Dead” fans. I guess it makes sense, if you’re going to prepare, you might as well prepare for the worst because then, you’ll be ready for whatever is likely to come. http://www.cdc.gov/phpr/zombies.htm
  • Long-term Food Storage Resources: Whether you are religious or not, the Latter-Day Saints don’t discriminate. They offer a lot of services for Emergency Preparedness and are especially knowledgable about long-term food storage. If we ever experience any major emergencies, the Latter-Day Saints will be on top of the ball. Here is a link to the site where you can access info on what you should do and where you can go to can food in bulk. https://www.lds.org/topics/food-storage/longer-term-food-supply?lang=eng#1

If you have any tips or would like to share your story or list for being prepared, please send to domorehere@gmail.com. We will add it to our post and give you credit for your generosity!

Do More. Kai the “Homeless Hero?”

7 Feb

As the great Uncle Ben (RIP) mentioned in Spiderman, “Remember, with great power. comes great responsibility.” But what if you don’t have “great power,” can you still be a hero?

There is a viral or soon to be viral video on youtube about a Homeless guy named “Kai” saving lives and taking action into his own hands. However controversial the action or explicit the language used by the “Homeless Hero,” if we cut through to what he did, he did what he thought was right to save lives. Based on the report and video, the local police who were on the scene thought so as well.

What do you think? Is he a hero?

Do More. Health – Awesome App to Find Doctors and Make Appointments

4 Feb

In NYC, we are just coming out of the peak of the flu season (not fun) and one important way to Do More. is to be more proactive about your health. People often put-off finding a good doctor and making appointments because, let’s be honest, it ain’t easy. I recently read about this App called ZocDoc in Real Simple Magazine, and it is a great app that helps you find good doctors (has star reviews and comment from real patients, doc bios, doc specialties, etc.) and make appointment within minutes (available days and times are in the app). I’ve included a story below of how ZocDoc saved our New Years 2013.

Here’s how to Download ZocDoc on an iPhone/iPad:https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zocdoc-doctor-appointments/id391062219?mt=8

True Story: This past holiday season in San Fran, I used ZocDoc when I caught the flu. We didn’t know any doctors in the area, so we used ZocDoc to find a emergency clinic that was open on New Year’s Eve! The place was convenient and the service was great – if we didn’t use ZocDoc it would’ve been a colossal pain to find help that day – so thanks ZocDoc!

See some screenshots from the ZocDoc app below.
